What is the history of Springtown, Texas?

Springtown, Texas, is 25 miles from Fort Worth. Many people in Springtown live in Parker County. The county was named for Isaac Parker, the relative of Cynthia Ann Parker. She was captured by Comanche Indians and became the mother of Quanah Parker. Joseph Ward lived in Springtown after he arrived there with other settlers.

Ward was impressed by the untamed landscape when he arrived in Walnut Creek. There were rolling hills with trees and wildlife. At the base of a hill, 25 cold springs were flowing from it.

Ward started to make a town named Littleton Springs. There were hard times and Comanche warriors. But the town grew and changed its name to Springtown. In 1877, there was a school, hotel, two general stores, two blacksmith shops, and three cotton gins.

The town was created in 1884. Two educational centers were founded that year – the College Hill Institute and Springtown Male and Female Institute. Soon, many people came to Springtown for its excellent education.

By the turn of the century, public schools came. This caused people to stop going to school at Male and Female Institute. The building was moved to be City Hall. A place for meetings was added to the City Hall called the “Tabernacle.” The Tabernacle got its name because of all the big revival gatherings that happened at it. In 1936, during the Great Depression, a group from the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) removed both City Hall and the old Tabernacle.

The CCC built the current Tabernacle building that is still in town. The community was proud of the stone and wood fence around it to keep horses, wagons, and buggies from ruining the Tabernacle. They put a well on the north side of the building. This made it more appealing because it has cool water. The space has been used for weddings, religious services, political rallies, graduation ceremonies, and funerals.

There were a lot of challenges in the past. People faced a lot of problems, but they stayed, and now it is Springtown. There was a school and lots of shops and factories. The town was incorporated in 1884.
